Some kitchens just need a little updating. Others are ready for a full transformation — and this Shawnee, KS project was firmly in the second category.

The Starting Point

The homeowners came to us with a kitchen full of golden oak cabinetry — solid, well-built, and totally out of step with the light, clean look they wanted for their home. The layout worked fine for daily life, but the finish felt dated, and the space needed a real refresh from the cabinets down to the countertops.

Clearing the Way — With a Little Help

Before any new cabinetry could go in, the old oak cabinets had to come out. Rather than sending them to a landfill, we partnered with Habitat for Humanity KC to deconstruct and donate the old cabinets so they could go on to a second life in someone else’s home.

A huge shoutout to Kelli and Mario, the ReStore deconstruction crew who handled the removal. They were fabulous to work with — efficient, careful with the surrounding space, and a genuine pleasure to have on site. Thanks also to Paul Blanche, ReStore’s partnership manager, who helped coordinate the scheduling and logistics behind the scenes to make the whole pickup run smoothly.

The Transformation

With the old cabinetry cleared out, we got to work bringing the new design to life:

• White shaker cabinets throughout, for a clean, timeless look that will stay in style for years to come
• A custom white oak island, adding warmth and a natural wood contrast against all that crisp white
• Quartz countertops, for a durable, low-maintenance surface with a polished, elevated feel
• Updated under-cabinet lighting to make the space feel bright and functional for everyday cooking

The combination of white shaker cabinetry with a wood-tone island is one of our favorite pairings — it keeps the kitchen feeling open and airy while still bringing in warmth so the space doesn’t feel sterile or cold.
